Advantages of Distributed Representations


  1. Similarity and generalization e.g. if we discover that a chimpanzee likes onions then similarity between pattern for chimpanzee and ape allows us to automatically infer that apes like onions
  2. Corollary: Can represent type/instance information easily
  3. Creation of new concepts - no need to create new hardware for each new concept
    no need to decide where one concept ends and another begins
