Annealing the Neighbourhood Size

• One problem with SOM learning is that nets can become twisted.

• This problem can be alleviated by starting the neighbourhood function with a broad neighbourhood (so that all units are updated a bit on each cycle) and then gradually making the neighbourhood smaller.

• This proces is called neighbourhood annealing.
